Designing for The Elderly: An Empathy Experiment

Place : Kule (Tower) 2. Floor

Date : 02.11.2018

Time : 09:30 (A.M.)

Duration : 3 hours

Facilitators : Aykut Coşkun, Magnus Olsson

Number of Part.: 24

Language : English

Purpose and Content:

1) to create an awareness of inclusive design,
2) to learn a new user research technique, i.e. empathy experiments, and
3) create inspirational ideas for inclusive everyday objects.

In the workshop, the participants will identify design opportunities for inclusive everyday objects that makes the life of elderly easier through conducting an empathy experiment. This technique is a useful participant observation technique providing more insights about “what is to be an elderly person” then conducting interviews with elderly. Working in groups three or four, the participants will be asked to “mimic” an elderly person by using the probes given to them (e.g. clothes, eyeglasses, walking stick). After this preparation phase, they will be given an everyday task to fulfill (e.g. going to the cafeteria and ordering a coffee, going to the toilet, ordering food online and so on). Based on this performance, they will identify the problematic situations that an elderly can face when performing simple everyday tasks. Then, they will generate ideas to respond to these problems, and present these ideas to the audience.

Agenda:

09.30 – 10.00: Introduction to inclusive design and to empathy experiments

10.00 – 11.00:  Empathy experiment

11.00 – 12.00:  Data analysis and idea generation

12.00 – 12.30:  Presentation of the findings and group discussion
