Purpose and Content:

The “Icon Design for Accessibility and Inclusivity” workshop aims to understand the concept of accessibility and its requirements, to be able to understand the lack of representation of an icon’s accessibility, to develop a critical perspective regarding how inclusive an icon can be, and to produce alternative designs following these important steps. The workshop will focus on identifying the concepts that are necessary for accessibility and explore the possibilities for icon design with sketches as well as the process of designing original icon alternatives. It will be possible to both design icons using paper-pencils and/or with computers with the materials provided.


10.00-10:30: Communication design through signs, symbols and icons

10:30-11:00: Analysis and interpretation of the accessibility if icon designs

11:00-13:00: Sketches and design process

13:00-14:00: Presentation of results and discussion

Çağla Turgul

Çağla Turgul graduated from İzmir Özel Amerikan Lisesi, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York (Graphic Design Undergraduate Degree) and Marmara University (Graphic Design Graduate Degree). She worked at various advertising agencies and design offices (Güzel Sanatlar Bates, Lowe Adam, Ajans Ultra and BEK Tasarım) as graphic designer and art director (1994-2001). She taught Typography (Yıldız Technical University, Department of Art and Design (2001- 2002) and Visual Design Project Courses (Marmara University, School of Fine and Applied Arts, Graphic Design Department (2005- 2009). She has been teaching Typography, Visual Design, Typography Studio and Visual Design Studio Courses at Koç University, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Media and Visual Design Department (2010 – ).

Hatiye Garip

Hatiye Garip recieved her bachelor’s degree from Istanbul Bilgi University, Deparment of Visual Communication Design as valedictorian of her class in 2015. She continues her academic studies as a MSc candidate in Design, Technology and Society Program at Özyeğin University. Besides her academic studies, she continues her works as a freelance illustrator and designer.
