Purpose:

The aim of this workshop is to,

1) introduce virtual reality storytelling space to the participants,

2) give introductory information on virtual reality, and

3) provide an immersive psychosis experience and discussion.

Content:

Psychosis, is a condition which the person experiences it lost connection with the reality. Psychosis is a subject of study in medical schools and taught during undergraduate psychology courses and as a part of basic sciences. However; the lack of practice, observation and experience opportunity, as well as lack of a holistic approach; experts who will work in healthcare field, don’t receive an effective education process. In this workshop, we will go beyond common learning materials and try to emphasize how to use virtual reality related practices in psychosis education. With this aim, based on the virtual reality materials that designed to observe psychosis cases and experience psychotic symptoms; we will be discussing experience, co-design, storytelling and share ideas.

10.00 – 10.30:               Introduction to Virtual Reality Design Space

10.30 – 11.00:               Introduction to Psychosis and VR-Psychosis examples

11.00 – 12.30:               Discussion on the immersive stories and ideation

12.30 – 13.00:               Presentation of the final insights.

Gizem Erdem

Completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Boğaziçi University Department of Psychology, her M.Sc. and PhD in The Ohio State University department of Development and Family Sciences in the sub-branch of Couple and Family Therapist. She worked on projects about stopping teenage crimes in University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health in 2014-2015 as postdoctoral researcher. She works as assistant Professor in Koç University Department of Psychology. She stayed in Harvard Public Health Institute in Summer 2017 and in University of Lisbon Department of Social Sciences in June 2018 as visiting assistant Professor. She conducts projects on teenagers at risk and their parents with UNODC, UNICEF, TC Ministry of Justice, TC Ministry of Family and Social Policies. Along her academic works, she arranges workshops and see patients in a private therapy center.

Ali Vatansever

Graduated from I.T.U. with a B.Sc. degree in industrial product design, Istanbul Bilgi University with an MA in Film and TV and Rochester Institute of Technology with an MFA degree in film production. He is now teaching Film Production at Koç University.
Along with shorts, video and documentary works, he directed two feature films, which has been screened in various international film festivals. Since 2016, he is working on film production in VR.

Asım Evren Yantaç

Finishing his PhD in Interaction Design, he studied his Post Doc studies in Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, on the topic of employing mixed reality technologies for sensory normalization of individuals with autism. He works as a research faculty at Media and Visual Arts Department and Research Center for Creative Industries at Koç University, since 2013, where he runs the Happern Research Group, that focuses on exploratory research studies on user experience design, interaction and information design and mediated reality technologies.

Kemal Kuşcu

Complete his education in İstanbul University Medicine, Marmara University Department of Psychiatry in Medicine, Community Health Care in Marmara University Institute of Health Sciences, London University (MPH)- University College (Msc), systematic family therapy in Children and Family Department of Tavistock and Portman Clinic. He works as psychiatry instructor at Koç University and Marmara University and teaches in Mimar Sinan University. Within the Social Experiences Laboratory and Ethnographer, which he manages, he focuses on topics such as social interactions and experiences research, organizational learning, changes depending on design. He maintains and manages projects focusing on design and insight in social interactions and experience research, both in national and international organizations.

Sinem Şemsioğlu

Sinem Şemsioğlu graduated from Oberlin College in December 2014, with Mathematics and Computer Science majors. She worked in Monitise (now called Commencis) as a web developer for a year. In September 2016, she started her direct PhD studies in Koc University’s Design, Technology and Society Department. She is currently researching how emotions can be represented in Virtual and Augmented Reality under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Asım Evren Yantaç.
